Research Awards
The Saudi Dental Society (SDS) gives three different types of Research Awards annually:
- Young Dentist Research Awards (YDRA):
This category is limited to Dental Interns or those who have successfully completed their Dental Internship Program within eighteen months on or before the deadline. Following an application process, the Award Committee will select up to six (6) finalists who will present their research entries in the coming SDS Conference/Meeting. Each of the finalists will be given a certificate. After the oral presentations, cash awards and plaques will be given to any three-research projects that were submitted for that year and were judged to be the best.
- Graduate Student Research Awards (GSRA):
This category is limited to graduate students who are currently enrolled in a dental specialty-training program or for those who have completed their training program within eighteen months on or before the deadline. Following an application process, the Award Committee will select up to six (6) finalists who will present their research entries at the SDS Conference/Meeting. Each of the finalists will be given a certificate. After the oral presentations, cash awards and plaques will be given to any three-research projects that were submitted for that year and were judged to be the best.
- Poster Presentation Awards (PPA):
This category is open to all Dental Students, Interns, Graduate Students, General Dentist or Dental Specialists who have submitted their entries to be presented during the 23rd Saudi Dental Society International Dental Conference and is accepted by the Scientific Committee as entries for the Poster Presentation. The best three Poster Presentations will receive a cash award and plaque.
2012 SDS YOUNG DENTIST RESEARCH AWARDS
(YDRA)
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
ELIGIBILITY
- Entrants should be an active member in SDS who are currently enrolled in a dental internship program, or have received their internship certificate within 18 months prior to the Young Dentist Research Awards (YDRA) application deadline.
- Research projects previously submitted to YDRA competition will not be accepted.
SUBMISSION
1. Manuscripts submission deadline: 30 November 2011. Any research study completed during undergraduate program or internship program shall be eligible. Published research and/or submitted for publication is still eligible for competition.
2. In order to ensure efficient processing of your application, it is important that
the necessary requirements are submitted all together as follows:
a. Typewritten abstract in English, not exceed 250 words.
b. Typewritten manuscript in English, not exceed 2500 words.
c. Abridge CV (one-page) indicating the author’s academic& scientific
degrees.
3. The abstract format must be accomplished in the following manner.
a. Title should not exceed 10 words.
b. Author’s names and degree (s) must be typewritten in capital letters. The name of the institution (s) must be enclosed in parenthesis.
c. The abstract must describe the objectives, methods, results and
conclusions.
4. If more than one author is involved, a written permission for contribution
from the co-authors is required. (Kindly complete the written permission form by every co-author separately)
5. Presenter must submit a one-page summary of his/her scientific and academic
degrees.
6. Applicant must submit official document (s) for verification of his/her
eligibility: i.e. official letter from the dental school stating that he/she is an intern student or an official copy of his/her internship certificate signifying the date of graduation.
7. A panel of judges will score submissions independently. The first six (6)
highest scoring manuscripts will be considered as finalists. These finalists will be notified on the last week of December 2011. The finalist must pledge to present on the specified given time otherwise his /her nomination will be cancelled and replaced by the next ranking candidate. (Kindly complete the pledge form)
8. Finalists will be required to present a fifteen (15) minutes summary of their
projects. Five (5) minutes will be allowed for discussion. The best three manuscripts and oral presentations will receive cash awards and plaques.

The following criteria will be the basis in judging the manuscript entries:
- Significance of the research
- Suitability of the study design
- Validation of the data and statistical analysis
- Explanation of the discussion and the conclusions on the basis of the data
- Scientific writing of the manuscript
- Quality of the presentation
- Response to the judges

certificate within 18 months prior to the Graduate Student Research Awards
(GSRA) application deadline.
2. Research projects previously submitted to GSRA competition will not be

ELIGIBILITY
Entrants should be an active member in SDS, and must be either Dental Students, Interns, Graduate Students, General Dentist, Dental Specialists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, or Dental Laboratory Technicians who have submitted their papers for presentation during the 23rd Saudi Dental Society International Dental Conference and is accepted by the Scientific Committee as entry for Poster Presentation.
SUBMISSION
1. Manuscripts submission deadline: 30 November 2011.
2. If more than one author is involved, a written permission for contribution
from the co-authors is required. (Kindly complete the written permission form by every co-author separately)
3. The type of the poster should be indicated (e.g. scientific research, case report,
literature review, survey, etc.)
4. Presenter must submit a one-page summary of his /her scientific and
Academic Degrees (i.e. CV).
5. Upon approval of the Scientific Committee for the paper you have submitted
to be presented as a Poster, you will be notified by the Committee of your eligibility to enter for the Poster Presentation Awards (PPA) Competition.

PPA CRITERIA
The following criteria will be the basis in judging the Poster entries:
- Innovation and originality of the research idea
- Significance of the research
- Suitability of the study design
- Validation of the data and statistical analysis
- Explanation of the discussion and the conclusions on the basis of the data
- Quality of the presentation (presenter present in a concise and clear manner)
- Response to the judges and audience (presenter answers questions effectively)
- Scientific writing and overall impact of the poster (poster cover key points of research and includes important data & illustrations must be graphically clear and understandable.
